Why run in the rain?

Running in the rain offers some unique benefits that can enhance your running journey. Not only does it provide a change of scenery and a break from monotonous indoor workouts, but it also gives you an opportunity to challenge yourself mentally and physically. Embracing the elements can boost your resilience, strengthen your mindset, and increase your sense of accomplishment.

Tips for running in the rain

1. Dress appropriately

Wearing the right gear is essential when running in the rain. To help keep you dry as long as possible, opt for moisture-wicking clothing and a lightweight, waterproof jacket. A good pair of running shoes with ample traction is also crucial to prevent slipping on wet surfaces. A cap to keep the rain out of your eyes or off your glasses is a good idea, too.

If you run with an electronic device, make sure it's protected. I find a ziplock bag works well enough for me. VeryWellFit.com has some extra words of advice, like packing along an extra pair of socks and not overdressing.

2. Stay safe

Be mindful of the conditions when running in the rain. Avoid running in areas prone to flooding, and watch out for slippery surfaces. If there is lightning or thunder, it's best to postpone your run for safety reasons. You don't want to end up huddled under someone's porch for hours while drenched because you're surrounded by lightning--like what happened to me once, and never again.

Also, make sure you are visible. With overcast, cloudy and rainy conditions, it can be extra hard for drivers to see you. They may also be more distracted.

3. Embrace the wetness

Accept that you will get wet. Try to enjoy the experience rather than resist it. Embracing the sensation of raindrops on your skin can be surprisingly liberating and refreshing, especially as you get hot. When it's cooler out, that well-ventilated rain jacket might become one of your best buys. My cycling rain jacket doubles as my cool weather wet running jacket.

4. Post-run care

After your rainy run, make sure to dry off thoroughly and change into some warm, dry clothes as soon as possible to avoid getting chilled. Consider a warm beverage to help regulate your body temperature.

5. Have fun!

Above all, remember to have fun and enjoy the experience. Let go of your preconceived notions about perfect weather conditions and embrace the opportunity to connect with nature in a unique way.

Running in the rain can be a rewarding and memorable experience for runners of all levels. By following these tips and approaching rainy day runs with an open mind, you can turn a dreary day into a fun and invigorating workout session. You will feel stronger and more committed to your running journey!
